What a $10,000 personal loan costs

At an example APR of 20.70%, the midpoint of the advertised ranges our partners currently publish, a $10,000 loan works out at roughly $375 a month over three years or $269 a month over five. The shorter term costs about $3,508 in interest across the life of the loan; the longer one costs about $6,132.

That gap is the whole trade-off in one sentence: a longer term buys you a smaller monthly payment and charges you more in total. Pick the shortest term whose payment you can comfortably cover every month, including in a month where something goes wrong.

Can you qualify for $10,000?

$10,000 sits in the middle of the personal loan market, which is where the most competition is. Nearly every partner lends at this level, and borrowers with solid credit tend to see the widest spread of offers here. Expect the lender to verify income before funding.

No lender publishes a guaranteed approval score. What they do assess is whether the new payment fits alongside your existing obligations, so paying down a card balance before applying can matter as much as the score itself.

Ways to keep the cost down

A percentage point or two on a $10,000 loan is real money over five years, so it is worth a little effort before you accept the first offer.

  • Compare the APR rather than the monthly payment, since a low payment often just means a longer term
  • Check whether an origination fee is deducted, and whether you need to borrow slightly more to net the amount you need
  • Enrol in autopay where a discount is offered
  • Choose the shortest term you can service without strain
  • Avoid applying to several lenders one after another; use a single soft check comparison first

How personal loan rates are set

Most personal loans from our lending partners are unsecured and fixed rate. With no collateral involved, the lender prices the loan almost entirely on how likely it believes you are to repay. That judgment is built from your credit history, your income relative to your existing debt, how long you have been employed, and the amount and term you ask for.

Personal loans can also be secured by collateral, such as a motor vehicle. Pledging collateral can support a larger amount or a lower rate, but it puts the vehicle at risk if the loan is not repaid. Secured options vary by lender and may not be available through the lenders currently listed here.

The number that matters is the APR, not the interest rate. APR folds in the interest rate plus any origination fee, so it is the only figure that lets you line two offers up fairly. A loan quoted at a lower interest rate can easily cost more once a 6% origination fee is deducted from the money you actually receive.

  • Credit history and score band: the single biggest driver of the rate you are offered
  • Debt-to-income ratio: monthly debt payments measured against gross monthly income
  • Loan amount and term: longer terms usually carry higher rates
  • Income stability: length of employment and whether income is verifiable
  • Whether the loan is secured: collateral can lower the rate a lender is willing to offer
  • State of residence: not every lender lends in every state

$10,000 personal loan questions

What credit score do I need for a $10,000 loan?

There is no single threshold. Our partners serve a wide span of credit profiles, and some evaluate income and employment alongside the score. Stronger credit generally means a lower APR rather than the difference between approval and refusal.

How much is the monthly payment on $10,000?

At an example APR of 20.70% it is around $269 a month over 60 months, or about $375 over 36 months. Use the calculator on this page to try your own rate and term.

How quickly could the money arrive?

Funding speed is set by the lender, not by us. Many of our partners advertise funding within one to a few business days of final approval, though verification steps can add time.

Does checking rates hurt my credit score?

Seeing your options through WalletScout does not affect your score. If you go on to complete a full application with a lender, that lender may run a hard credit check at that point.
